Gran Moraine is located in the Yamhill-Carlton district and benefits from several of the distinguishing features of this particular AVA: the cooling effect of ocean breezes through the Van Duzer Corridor, a relatively dry climate due to its location in the rain shadow of the Coastal Range, and the shallow and particularly well-drained Willakenzie series of ocean sediment soils.  Sedimentary soil Pinot noir tends to display a darker fruit profile, with more blackberry and plum nuances, as well as additional notes of earth, pepper, and minerals. These wines also tend to evolve more as they age, displaying subtle, different aspects as they evolve.
