VINOUS on the 2015 EIEIO Pinot noirs

Josh Raynolds on EIEIO and Jay McDonald:

“This winery is a consistently reliable source for elegant Pinots that are not lean or mean. Jay McDonald, who has this farm but isn’t especially old (get it?) isn’t averse to shifting winemaking styles around a bit depending on variables such as vintage variabilities, yield, stem and fruit ripeness and so forth but the common thread that runs through each vintage is maintaining energy. I found his 2014s favoring more dark fruit than usual, which is in keeping with the style of the year and his 2015s, although plenty concentrated, still stay on the graceful side of the Pinot equation. McDonald showed me an “introductory” 2016, that he blended from various casks “to get an early peek at the vintage”. The blend showed an interesting combination of 2014 and 2015 qualities, with an emphasis on lively, spicy (2015 qualities) dark fruit (a la 2014) with rounded tannins and subtle floral character.”
